Rodgers is still a great quarterback, but his best days are behind him. The Steelers aren't banking on him getting back to his MVP form, and that's a smart move. However, they are counting on him to be an effective, efficient quarterback, which is a tall order at his age. What makes this particularly fascinating is the lack of other options. The Steelers didn't have a ton of great quarterback options to choose from, and they didn't want to throw big money at an unproven commodity. This raises a deeper question: is the Steelers' offense really that dependent on Rodgers? The Steelers did add to Rodgers' receiving group, trading for Michael Pittman Jr. and drafting Germie Bernard. But the Pittman trade was a bit of a surprise, and a risk. Why pay Pittman $24 million when Wan'Dale Robinson made $17.5 million per year as a free agent? In my opinion, the Steelers could have gotten more value for their money elsewhere. The Steelers also added to their defense, locking in cornerback Jamel Dean and making other moves to shore up that side of the ball. This is a smart move, as a strong defense can keep them competitive and in games throughout the regular season. However, the offense should be much better than last season, due to the presence of new head coach Mike McCarthy as the play caller, and the upgrades at receiver. What many people don't realize is that the Steelers' defense could be their saving grace this season. But the offense still has a long way to go to be truly competitive in the playoffs. If you take a step back and think about it, the Steelers' offseason is a reflection of their organization's approach to building a winning team. They are taking calculated risks, making smart moves, and trying to balance a strong defense with an improved offense. However, the question remains: will it be enough to get over the hump in the playoffs? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain: the Steelers are certainly an interesting team to watch this season.
