Based in Margate, she utilizes advanced software like Cinema 4D and Redshift, yet her goal is to make her work appear as if it were crafted by human hands, with clay, fabric, and felt. The result is a distinctive style that has caught the attention of notable brands like Oatly, Coldplay, and Netflix.
Her characters, with their rubbery, puppet-like proportions, and environments that are both cozy and unsettling, create a sense of tension. This tension is further emphasized by the textures she creates, scanning and wrapping clay textures onto her digital models, and deliberately scaling them incorrectly to achieve that 'stitched together' look.
From 2D to 3D: A Creative Rebirth
Christa's journey into 3D was born out of a need for creative reinvention. Having felt stagnant in her 2D work, she found a new dimension of exploration in 3D animation. It offered her a fresh aesthetic, technical, and narrative playground, and a renewed sense of playfulness.
"Learning 3D gave me a jolt of inspiration. I could take my 2D characters and place them in a stranger, more physical world. It was like playing The Sims, and I love The Sims!" Christa explains.
The Warmth of the Unsettling
At first glance, Christa's images appear warm, colorful, and cheerful. Characters lounge on sofas, surrounded by band posters, gazing into mirrors. But upon closer inspection, a darker undercurrent reveals itself. A laptop screen reads "hot slugs in your area," a drink is spilled and ignored, and an Oatly carton is poured messily.
Christa intentionally creates this tension. She's not interested in creating safe, comforting images. Instead, she's drawn to the interior worlds of her characters, exploring the anxious, funny, and embarrassing aspects of life. By presenting a cozy exterior, she lures viewers in, only to reveal a more unsettling truth.
Navigating the Nuanced Middle Ground
In a digital landscape that often favors either technical perfection or raw, immediate expression, Christa has carved out a unique middle ground. Her work is a thoughtful exploration of the existential thoughts and uneasiness that permeate our current reality.
"There's this constant background noise of technology, AI, political instability, and climate anxiety. It creates an ambient uneasiness. My work comes from that place. I want to create something that feels honest and relatable," Christa shares.
Her short film, "Mucky," is a perfect example of this. Set in a world where pigs live like humans, it humorously examines our collective obsession with 'going back to basics.'
The Future of Christa's Art
While the world of animation and XR continues to evolve, Christa remains focused on the space she's carved out for herself. She wants to continue making short films, illustrations, and GIFs that straddle the line between handmade and digital, funny and uncomfortable, cute and bleak.
"That tension is where I feel most excited to create from." Christa says.
And it's hard to argue with her. Christa Jarrold's work is a refreshing reminder that, in a world that often rewards extremes, there's power in finding your unique middle ground.
